INSTRUCTIONS
Read eligibility requirements on our website BEFORE you submit an application. If eligible, fill out applicant profile and contact information below.
All other required application materials must be uploaded as separate documents according to directions given. Accepted upload formats are only PDF and DOC (not to exceed a total of 16MB for all files uploaded), any audio files (MP3 or WAV) or video files (AVI, MOV, MPEG or
WMV) must be available on a third party site. (We recommend blip.tv for audio and youtube.com for video, if the clips are not already available online.) Correlating URL addresses must be provided with all uploaded work samples, if applicable.
Once application is submitted, email uscgetty@usc.edu for confirmation that it was received.
Deadline for submission is July 14, 2009. Applications will be accepted on that day until 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time (PST). Admission Committee’s decision will be emailed or communicated by phone to you by August 5, 2009.

Write a 750-word statement of purpose in English speculating on arts journalism’s future. What will your role be? Comment on arts journalism’s purpose and the effect the Internet and technology have exerted on the relationship between the audience and the arts. Outline your current responsibilities, including the circulation, listenership or viewership numbers of your media outlet. Briefly describe your journalism experience and arts background. What distinguishes your career and work? Why do you want to participate in the Fellowship?

Include your education and employment history and selected listing of any books, articles or other work.

* WORK SAMPLES:
You are required to submit three different work samples of your best work published or produced within the past year (June 2008 – June 2009). You may submit a variety of work (online, print, broadcast, etc.), but only three submissions will be accepted. Make sure submissions are legible/audible and the date of publication is visible and accurate. If you are strictly an editor or producer, include brief descriptions of the decisions that took each piece from conception to publication. If your pieces are not in English, provide a translation with the work sample. All written samples, translations and/or descriptions must be uploaded in PDF or DOC format.
In addition, if your work is:

- Video and/or audio: Submit clips that are 10 min. or less, briefly note what you created (e.g. story idea, the script, camera work, editing, etc.) and provide URL addresses.

* LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION:
Supply one letter from editor/manager/producer who has supervised your work, commenting on your journalism qualifications, character, potential to benefit from the program and above all the quality of your work.
For staff journalists: The letter must include a statement that your media organization will grant you a three-week leave of absence, if you are accepted into the program.
For affiliated freelancers: The editor’s/manager’s letter must state your upcoming work schedule and/or usual beats.
For independents: The letter must be written by a person of stature or respected mentor who is familiar with your work and can testify to your professional expertise.
